Mark Anthony Wingson and Sara Hurrle earned their money on Saturday night at the IFBB Pro Grand Prix in Culver City in the most competitive lineups to date for each of the newly-formed divisions.
In Women’s Physique, Sara Hurrle notched her second pro win of the year in a close matchup with Patricia Mello. The last five weeks have been a whirlwind for the Colorado-based Hurrle. She made the decision to switch to women’s physique just weeks before winning the St. Louis Pro. Two weeks later, finished second at the Governor’s Cup before coming to Los Angeles and notching win No. 2 of her pro career.
“We decided to go in that St. Louis show in very, very quickly,” Hurrle said of the decision to switch from Figure to Women’s Physique. “It’s a bit surreal at this point having done these three shows in five weeks, but right away I knew this was a good fit for me. I like being able to flex and show little more of my personality on stage. I’m having a blast.”
Competing for the first time in the new division, Mello showed she has the potential to do very well once she gets more comfortable with the mandatory poses. Sabrina Taylor and Karina Nascimento look to be third and fourth, respectively. Nascimento won the first IFBB Pro Women’s Physique event on February 25 when she won the Phoenix Pro.
Hurrle, meanwhile, will take a well-earned break before getting back on stage.
“I’d like to do a show at the end of of year and then see what happens in 2013,” Hurrle said. “Give myself a little time and an offseason to train specifically for physique. I’m excited to see Kim Oddo and I can do and what changes we can make.”
In Men’s Physique, Wingson made his pro debut against the top four from the division’s first and only professional contest, the Governor’s Cup on March 24. Things were very different from that first contest, with all but one of those four – including Governor’s Cup winner Matt Christianer – placing out of the top five.
Collin Humphrey placed second while Miguel Aguilar placed third for the second consecutive contest.
Wingson earned his pro card by winning his class at the IFBB North Americans last September.
