WHAT I WANT “I started sports at a very young age and went on to get a partial scholarship to play football at Texas  Lutheran. I went on to study exercise science and get a degree in that. When I learned about manipulating the body with different training techinques and different nutrition modalities, it really fell into place. I knew this is what I wanted to do.”

FROM WITHIN “Team sports is a lot different than what we do on a daily basis,  but what I learned through football is dedication and hard work is the only thing that’s going to get you to where you want to go. If you’re not decicated to making your meals and getting your cardio and training in, you’re not going to be ready for the stage. The drive has to come a lot more from within than when you’re a part of a team.”

THE OLYMPIA EFFECT “In 2009 I met [finacee] Adela [Garcia} at a Gold’s Gym. I started going to shows after that and it was kind of a shocker. I didn’t really fall in love with bodybuilding until I went to watch her at the 2008 Olympia.”

TWO IS A CROWD? I like Men’s Physique division because I think it’s an attainable look. Bodybuilding just wasn’t in  my genetics. But when men’s physique came along, I didn’t want to compete at first – it’s hard enough to have one person compete in the househould, let alone two people. But she was like, ‘I think you ought to do it.’

SURPRISE, SURPRISE “My whole goal in going to the USAs, I really just wanted to get up there and place top five. I thought if I did that I would have a  pretty good chance of going to the North Amreicans and doing well there. I figured if I continued to compete at the national level, sooner or later I would go against some competition where I would be able to beat them. But it was still a huge surprise to win the overall. I wan’t thinking that at all.”
